Endowed with a €1.5 million grant from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), the PRE-DETECT-HF project officially kicked off on 1 January, 2024. The grant will fund a ground-breaking clinical trial that aims to utilise AI-powered speech analysis for the early detection and treatment of heart failure.
This project will be carried out by a prestigious consortium of partners, led by Noah Labs, including Maastricht University Medical Center+, Clinic Barcelona, DKV Salud, ProductLife Group, Institute for Policy Evaluation, IDIBAPS and the German Foundation for the Chronically Ill.
Advancing heart failure monitoring through voice-based ADHF detection
The €1.5 million grant from EIT Health will fuel a two-year initiative aimed at advancing heart failure monitoring through voice-based detection of acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF). The randomised controlled trial (RCT) conducted in Barcelona and Maastricht will involve around 200 patients. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of voice analysis in identifying early warning signs and predicting ADHF exacerbations. This pioneering approach has the potential to revolutionise the management of ADHF by providing a non-invasive and cost-effective means of early detection, leading to improved patient outcomes and reduced hospitalisations.
As project lead, Noah Labs brings its expertise in developing AI-powered solutions for cardiovascular disease management. "We are thrilled to be at the forefront of this pioneering research," says Dr. Leonhard Riehle, Chief Medical Officer & Co-founder of Noah Labs. "Working alongside renowned medical institutions like Maastricht UMC+ and Clinic Barcelona, we are confident that this project will bring us closer to our shared mission: Empowering individuals with chronic conditions to live longer, healthier lives."
A Strong Consortium for Shared Success
The consortium brings together a diverse group of institutions, each playing a crucial role. Noah Labs provides the core technology and artificial intelligence expertise. Maastricht UMC+, a leading academic medical centre, provides clinical expertise and research infrastructure. Clinic Barcelona, a renowned cardiology centre, contributes its clinical experience and patient access. Additional partners DKV Salud (Spain), PLG (France), IPE-Institute for Policy Evaluation (Germany) and the German Foundation for the Chronically Ill (Germany) offer valuable insights from the insurance, regulatory, economic, and patient perspectives. Altogether, we will conduct a multi-centre, randomised and controlled trial to clinically validate the technology, improve the algorithm’s accuracy and accelerate the solution to market, starting in the Netherlands and Spain.
Positive Outlook for Cardiovascular Care
This collaborative effort reflects the growing potential of AI in transforming healthcare. By harnessing the power of voice analysis, the PRE-DETECT-HF project holds immense promise for revolutionising the management of heart failure, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes and improved quality of life.
